How to Play Dominoes

Introduction

Dominoes is a family of tile-based games for two or more players who compete by matching the ends of their tiles together. The most common version is played with a double-six set of 28 tiles, each of which is divided into two square ends. Each end is marked with a number of pips (dots) from 0 to 6.

Objective of the Game

The objective of the game is to be the first player to get rid of all of their tiles by matching them to the tiles on the table. The player who goes out first wins the game.

Setup

To set up the game, the tiles are shuffled face down and each player draws 7 tiles. The remaining tiles are placed face down in a pile in the center of the table. The player with the highest double (a tile with the same number of pips on both ends) starts the game.

Gameplay

On their turn, a player can either play a tile from their hand that matches one of the ends of the tiles on the table or draw a tile from the pile. If a player cannot play a tile, they must pass their turn.

The game continues until one player goes out or until the game is blocked. A game is blocked when neither player can play a tile and there are no more tiles left in the pile.

Scoring

If a player goes out, they win the game and the other players' scores are added up. The player with the lowest score wins the game.

Variations

There are many different variations of dominoes, including:

  • Draw dominoes: In this variation, players can draw as many tiles as they want from the pile on their turn.
  • Block dominoes: In this variation, the game is blocked when there are no more tiles left in the pile and neither player can play a tile.
  • Muggins dominoes: In this variation, players can score points by playing tiles that match the number of pips on the ends of the tiles on the table.
